Domain: more inclusive than any other category, bigger than kingdom. Kingdom: a group of closely related phylums. Phylum: a group of closely related classes. Class: a group of closley realated orders. Order: a group of closely related families. Family: a group of closley relates genuses. Genus: a group of closely related species. Species: the basic unit of biological classification, consists of related individuals that can breed amongst themselves but not with other species.
Linnaeus created a system to categorize organisms. Along with that he was the first to come up with a hierarchal naming system. He also developed binomial nomenclature; whichis a two part naming sytem that is universally accepted.
Early Classification System:
Aristotle, who was a Greek philosopher, created a system of classification that group organismsn by movement, such as flying, slithering, and swimming. His classification for grouping "plants and animals" was wrong, because not every animal had the same characteristcs. His system of classification looked at behaviors instead of similarities and differences.
Taxonomy is the discipline of classifying organsims and assigning each of them a universally accepted name.
